Exterior
Brand identity of a cafe is crucial to the success of its business. Therefore the shopfront design is one of the most important factor. It must be able to attract and entice the targeted audience to enter the premises.
Lighting
Lighting has always been an integral element in all types of commercial businesses. Most retail businesses rely heavily on bright and focused lights to showcase their products. As for food and beverage it depends largely on the type of outlet as well as the targeted audience. In the case of café, warm lighting is usually preferred to set the mood right for a cosy and relaxing ambience. It is also important to choose the correct type and shape of light fitting as it may also add to the overall experience of the customer.
Colours and Materials
Colours and materials are usually the determining factor that will reflect the brand identity of a cafe. Bright and vibrant colours are more attractive to youngsters whereas natural and neutral colours will be more receptive to the working class. Children tend to get attract to the two extreme ends of hard, smooth surfaces and soft, cuddly textures. Adults will usually prefer a combination of robustness with a comfortable level of softness.
Gastronomic Analogy
This is a concept which can be applied perfectly to cafe interior design as it depicts the usage of suggestive elements to entice consumers to spend on a particular item. Picture the walls being painted white as a background with shapes emulating dripping liquid in a dark shade of brown. It will give consumers the impression of flowing chocolate and thus suggesting the customer to indulge in pastry dressed with hot dripping chocolate.
Balancing Function and Layout
There are many types of furniture that are suitable for cafes which depends largely on the style and concept. More importantly the flow of the entire layout must be smooth and spacing must be kept at comfortable distance so that customers can enjoy a little sense of privacy.
Music
Playing the correct music can create the perfect balance with the overall theme of the cafe, while the wrong selection will definitely affect the customers’ full enjoyment.
Volume level is another integral part that needs to be controlled according to the level the ambiance requires. For example soft and soothing music can usually be played at a slightly higher volume as this type of music is not as intrusive. Pop music should be played at a lower volume as most of these music are quite loud and fast-paced which can be quite agitating when customers are trying to have a conversation.
